Holiday readings: SFCC staff share their works

Faculty and staff members from inside and outside of Santa FeCommunity College’s creative writing program participate in an annual holiday-themed reading that showcases the talents of well-known local writers as well as avid hobbyists who want to share their work with the public. Among them are Miriam Sagan, a prolific writer, longtime faculty member, and founder of the Santa Fe Literary Review, which is published each year by the college, as well as the review’s current managing editor, Kate McCahill, who teaches English and creative writing. Many of the participating writers have had their work appear in the review, including creative writing instructor Terry Wilson, math instructor Carolyn Stupin, and Beth Anthony, a member of the administrative staff in SFCC’s liberal arts department. Other readers include Austin Eichelberger, who teaches English and writing; Behzad Dayeny, the director of food services at the community college, whose work centers around family, art, and his Iranian homeland; Fred Tixier, who works in the college’s testing center; and Karen Heiken Mittrach, a reading instructor who writes fiction.

McCahill, who organized the reading, said that the holiday theme is loosely interpreted by all, with subject matter covering snow, Christmas, Hanukkah, airports, gift-giving, family, and holiday parties — “the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
